illumin8® Frequently Asked Questions
We hear you! We feel your frustration. This is a very desirable feature for our product. That said, companies like DeepArt (website deepart.io) charge $249 EU for recording 1 minute of stylized video with their algorithm. It’s not even a real-time service. You upload your video and they return a 720p video file.
We plan to enable local recording [no uploading or downloading] in an upcoming release. We would’ve included it in our initial release if we were not negatively impacted by the latest Mac OS X [Mojave] release.

We plan to support every mainstream platform in the future. Potential business partners should contact us to discuss a relationship that may influence the sequencing of platform support work.

The history of the Apple ecosystem is one of platform stability that is unique amongst computing platforms. A primary reason is the lack of platform fragmentation [lots of versions] that other platforms suffer from.
As a software developer on the Mac OS X platform, we are forced to update our developer environment by Apple to the latest operating system version. As the first released version of illumin8 was built using the latest dev environment, it is impacted by changes that Apple has made to their OS that render it incompatible with older versions of Mac OS X 10.12.
Going forward, we will make past releases available and the user will have the choice to maintain a configuration that it runs on. We will release patches when possible. The primary factor will be the compliance and compatibility requirements that are established by Apple.
If you experience an error during the app install process on a Mac computer, please navigate to: “App Info | illumin8 Setup” for instructions on how to install illumin8.
We currently use the Mac OS X developer environment. That makes Mac OS X desktop computers (Mac Book, Mac Pro, iMac and Mac Mini) our first category of supported devices. We will create Essence Agents for other platforms (e.g. iOS, Android, Windows, Linux and our own Essence OS). With each newly supported platform, all of our previous and future products will run as if they were made for the supported platform. This is a unique “platform-agnostic” feature of Essence.

When I switch to an image or camera feed from transforming a video the video sound continues to play in the background.
The intended behavior is for the video to be closed and thus the audio stopped. However, this may occur in some cases when switching between media formats. A valid workaround for now is to pause the video before switching to a different piece of content. This issue should not present itself while switching between different videos and the app should function as expected.
This may occur on some Mac Book variants and is on the list of issues to be addressed. You can still adjust the sliders via the transformation galleries accessed via the amber appearance and blue scene buttons instead to tweak the appearance of your media.
When trying to open the app I get the message “illumin8 can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”.
This is a sandboxing issue that we intend to address in an upcoming update. For now, please follow the instructions in the “How to Run” section above to get the app working on your Mac.
Right now custom file names are presented in the save image popup window, but are not applied when the image is actually saved off. For now, users can manually rename the files if needed after they are saved via Apple’s Finder file system.
After expanding my media to fill the screen using the player controls, I cannot get back to the previous screen.
The button for entering fullscreen does not currently support toggling back and forth between the two views and is expected to work in the next version of illumin8 as intended. If you find yourself stuck in the expanded view, hit the home icon in the lower portion of the screen to return home, and select the blue scene icon on the home screen to return to where you left off with your transformations.
The team is currently iterating through graphical assets and alignments at a rapid pace as we continue to implement functionality. Users will notice more graphical polish as subsequent updated versions of the software are made available.
We are actively working on providing more explicit names for the transformation pieces that each slider adjusts, rather than the generic “Modifier” name currently in use. Along with these more useful modifier names, users can expect non-responsive sliders to become tied to actual transformation parameters in upcoming updates to illumin8.
The settings icon on the start or home screen of the application also reveals some sliders that are currently nonfunctional and can be ignored or toggled away to hide by clicking the settings icon on the home screen again.
illumin8 crashes when I add or remove a display to my system or change my monitor’s resolution or orientation.
Users can easily change their display configuration while illumin8 is closed, but changing any display configuration, including adding or removing devices is currently unsupported. If a display is disconnected at runtime for any reason, simply restarting the app will resolve this problem for now. This is a known issue tied to the same problem causing the window resizing/maximizing issue mentioned above, and should be addressed in a future update.
illumin8 will not actively refresh its window in macOS while not in focus to help lighten the processing load of the application. Simply clicking back inside of illumin8 will restore video playback, transformation animations, etc.
Certain transformations packaged in illumin8 actively utilize hardware like your machine’s GPU’s to achieve these effects, and most Macs will engage the fans when the chips go over a certain temperature. An upcoming patch to illumin8 will introduce mechanisms that allow the software to balance between hardware use and transformation quality.
I am having issues trying to use my webcam in illumin8 and in another application at the same time.
This is an issue we are tracking with other applications accessing the webcam device at the same time illumin8, this may cause the camera to behave strangely or stop working in either application. To avoid this issue, we suggest running illumin8 only while attached webcams are not in use by other software.
When I try to resize or maximize the application window I receive an error message that reads “ALERT: Unexpected Issue: Tech-Power_Api [ Gen_Smp_Clear ] Fail…etc.”
There is a known bug that involves resizing or changing the dimensions of the app window. For now we have locked down the size of the window to scale with your display, trying to maximize the application window may cause this crash. If this error appears you can hit the “I am done with this message” popup to close the app. From there, you should be able to reopen illumin8 with its current default size scaled to your display.
Simply restarting your computer should alleviate the problem and allow the app to run for longer than a few seconds before force closing itself. We have encountered this issue on a single laptop in our testing so far, and are trying to determine if the culprit is that specific computer rather than the application.
Sometimes I see vertical lines around the outside of certain icons and images in illumin8, why is that?
This is a known issue and nothing is functionally wrong with your version of the software that could cause these vertical artifacts. A future version of illumin8 is coming soon that will address this issue in the patch notes.
I get an error message stating “ALERT: Unexpected Issue: Brain#1 Gate_B.0X already Opening by This Brain…etc.” when attempting to launch illumin8, how can I launch the software successfully?
illumin8 is not supported on all previous version of the macOS operating system. If you are running any version of macOS 10.11 El Capitan or older, or are still seeing the issue on Sierra or High Sierra, try updating your operating system to the latest version, 10.14 Mojave via the Official App Store.
